I am going to play catch up a little on the blog to get ready for Christmas. Jansen played with the 7U GA Grays on Oct 16. This was his 1st player pitch tournament. He did really well and pitch 58 pitches.

Stage 3 Recovery

Jansen you continue to amaze us during all these surgeries. You are one strong little boy.

Recovery room...we had a long recovery this time around. We stayed over 2 hours, because he kept throwing up.

finally we are leaving the hospital. He continued to get sick all the way home and all night.

Wednesday Chris stayed home with Jansen and he continued to throw up and sleep. By 2:00, he started making a turn in the right direction. He ate and even wanted to go to baseball with Chris.

Paw Paw and Pat Pat came for a quick visit and even played a game with him.

I stayed home with him on Thursday and I can happily say he is back to his good old self. He hasn't had any pain this time around so far...The only problem he is having is his bottom is starting to itch from the skin graft and so is his ear.

Dr. Jones said everything went well with the surgery. We will go back Monday for post-op and take the stitches out. We know his ear will stay swollen for a good year, but we are all excited for this journey to be over. If all heals well, we might try and do stage 4 in February.

We spoke to Dr. Jones this morning and everything is going well. They took him back about 10:00, and the surgery should last about 3 1/2 hours.

Pre op Stage # 3

Well here we go again....Today I took Jansen for his pre-op for Stage 3 Ear Reconstruction Surgery. He got the okay to move forward. The surgery date is Tuesday, November 15.

Stage 3 is pretty involved I have been told. It is the stage where they "lift off the head." They will cut the ear away from head, and take a skin graft from his butt area to cover. This will cause the ear to swell a good bit again. Our plan is to keep him out of school that week and return after the Thanksgiving Holiday.

21 weeks

For some reason I just can't keep up with this blog lately. This week I will be 21 weeks with Ansley. We are both doing good.

At the last ultrasound at 19 weeks she weight about 8 1/2 oz. The boys enjoyed watching her on the screen this time around.

Weight gain so far: 4 to 5 lbs.

The doctor is on me to gain weight and I told them I have done this before and I know it will be coming)

Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins

Pumpkin Muffins
3 1/3 c. flour
2 1/4 c. sugar
2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. salt
2 c. pumpkin
4 eggs
1 c. oil (May also substitute 1 c. applesauce instead!)
2/3 c. water
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. chocolate chips (I’m not gonna lie. I usually add many more!)

Mix together first 5 ingredients. Mix well and add liquid ingredients. Mix in chocolate chips. Spoon into muffin tins. Bake at 350 for 15 minutes. Makes about 2 1/2-3 dozen muffins.

* If you’re in the mood for pumpkin bread, this make a yummy pumpkin bread too

16 week visit

I went to my regular doctor at 16 weeks and they once again had a hard time finding the heartbeat using the Doppler, so I got to see this little baby again on an ultrasound.

I had my 12 week doctors visit today and everything is looking good. They had trouble hearing the heartbeat with the Doppler, so I got to have another ultrasound...(loving this)

Weigh Gain: 2lbs.

Baby Heart rate: 181

Since I had to have an ultrasound, I asked about the sex of the baby...She told me her prediction......

GIRL!!!

We will see if she is correct in a few more weeks. I know it's still really early!!!

We had a great season with The Marlins and we sadly said good-bye to this wonderful team at the end of the season. I feel like they are my family, and I am going to miss each of them. Chris and I decided the best thing for Jansen was to play baseball with his own age group. I hate that we can't stay with this group of families forever, but we have to move on.... :(

Auburn vs. Alabama Baseball Game

For 2 years in a row now, we have driven to Auburn to watch Auburn play Alabama in a baseball game. Well once again, we get all the way there and the game was canceled due to rain. Sawyer and Jansen

We drove over an hour just to eat dinner at Cheeburger Cheeburger...It was YUMMY!!!

Shopping hoping the rain would go away so we could watch some baseball!!

Back in May before school got out our school had a Fun Run...This is our 1 fundraiser that we do and the boys love it every year. It is a great way to raise money for the school.

Mexican Chicken Ring

Mexican Chicken Ring
Adapted from Pampered Chef
Ingredients:
3 cooked & shredded chicken breasts
1 cup grated Cheddar cheese plus some for sprinkling on top
1 cup grated Monterey Jack cheese
¾ can of Rotel & all of the juice
3/4 cup light sour cream
1 package taco seasoning
2 rolls of regular sized crescent rolls
1 lime (juice)
2/3 cup finely crushed tortilla chips plus some for sprinkling on top

Combine chicken, Rotel, tortilla chips, sour cream, taco mix, cheese and 2T of lime juice.
Unroll and separate crescent dough. Arrange triangles on a baking sheet making a circle with wide ends overlapping in the center and points toward outside. Spread chicken mixture evenly into the center of the ring.
Fold the points of the crescents in and over. Sprinkle with remaining cheese and tortilla strips and bake at 375 for 20 minutes.

We are so Thankful Jansen's ear has healed.He is so proud of it that he wanted all his hair cut off for the summer.

We are 4 months since stage 2 and things are looking good. He did lose a little cartilage at the top of his ear, due to skin splitting several times. We finally took the advice of other doctors around the world, and let it heal. We need to move on to stage 3, but not sure when that will happen. Jansen is so busy with baseball, it has been put on hold.

How do you like Jansen's new haircut? It's taking me a few days to get use to it.

Several weeks ago, my friend Kelly and I were chosen to be a part of the GA Hands and Voices Advocate Training. The training was held in Macon, and couldn't have happened at a better time for me. The training was held Friday and Saturday...and all I can say is WOW!! This is a great organization in the state of GA and I can't wait to help other families throughout the state.

GA Hands and Voices:

Hands & Voices is a non-profit, parent-driven national organization dedicated to supporting families of children who are deaf or hard of hearing. We are non-biased about communication methodologies and believe that families can make the best choices for their child if they have access to good information and support. Our membership includes families who communicate manually and/or orally. From American Sign Language to cochlear implants, our organization represents people from all different approaches to, and experiences with, deafness or hearing loss. We are one of over 30 statewide chapters comprised mainly of parents along with professionals.

The training was AMAZING!! Even though it was weeks ago, I still get tears in my eyes just thinking about it. Thanks to Janet DesGeorges from the Colorado Hands and Voices for putting on a GREAT training.

I walked away from the training a different person. If you need resources for a child that is deaf or hard of hearing, and you live in the state of Georgia, please contact me and I will be glad to help. If I don't know the answer, I will find out for you.

On a different note:
This training came at the right time for me. Jansen was up for re-evaluation at the school system and they have been doing testing on him since October. This was a very stressful time for me. I knew Jansen was making progress with his school work, and I feared we would lose his IEP(he has had support with speech and language since he was 2). I went to his IEP meeting with an opened mind, and listened to the whole team speak about my child.

Here is a list of things that were discussed at the IEP meeting:

1. Testing from the school psychologist....everything was Average or Above Average

2. Speech/Language Therapist talked about his testing...everything was Average

3. Hearing Impaired Specialist: Talked about ways to help Jansen in the classroom and gave several accommodations that need to be put into place.

4. Classroom teacher discussed his progress in the classroom since Interventions were put into place with blending and sight words. She discussed the FM system and how she felt it was helping him in whole group setting .

5. I discussed the importance of making sure everyone knows about his hearing loss, and that I felt he needed extra support, due to the fact, on paper he qualifies as a "Hearing Impaired." I also stated that I felt Jansen has made a lot of progress in Kindergarten due to all the interventions that have been put into place.

6. The IEP team discussed all this info and Jansen LOST his IEP...This has been very hard for me to swallow. As an Advocate for Jansen and a teacher, this was not what I wanted to happen. Don't get me wrong, I am very happy that Jansen is doing well and that all testing is normal, but I also feel he needs support in the classroom. I am NOT giving up on this, and I will stay on top of things for Jansen. Jansen will be going to 1st grade next year, and I will be by his side the whole step of the way.

Since the meeting, Jansen is in SST (Student Support Team), due to the Accommodations that he needs. Some accommodations that he has in place are: Seating, FM System, and the teacher will check for understanding once directions are given. He is still being evaluated by the Occupational Therapist for fine motor skills. I hope to hear these results before the end of the school year.

I took Jansen for a hearing test on March 28, 2011, and here is the info:

1. Jansen's right ear is still perfect with an air conduction score of 10db.

2. Jansen's left ear still has a working nerve with an air conduction score of 75db.

I know this is a long post...and I hope I didn't lose you in between. I needed to get this out of my head and written down so I don't forget.

PLEASE be an advocate for your child, and let your voice be heard.

Who plays 2 tournaments in 1 weekend?? Saturday: Jansen played in a tournament in Fayetteville and they won 1st place.... and then they played in another tournament Sunday and won 1st place. This little 5U Gamers team from McDonough, knows how to play some ball. Jansen has played in 3 tournaments with the Gamers and have won 1st place all 3 times. Congrats Gamers!!!

I'm Special

On my way from Heaven, God delayed my trip that day. He said that I was special, and then sent me on my way. But not before he kissed me, Right upon my ear. He left his blessed mark to carry with me here. He whispered in my ear right then, that He loved me without doubt, and then He closed my ear up tight, so the whisper won't get out. He told me both my legs were strong and would help me stand up tall. He told me both my arms would work to catch me if I fall. My eyes would catch my memories to store within the pages of my mind, My heart would fill with all the things I would love, so many things, I would find. He told me I could fall asleep to my Daddy's bedtime tales, and listen while my Mother sings of seas and boats with sails. One ear, He told me, could hear the sounds that little birdies make. The other ear was his gift to me, a blessing for my sake. For when I'm feeling sad, he said, my other ear would hear, His whispered words of eternal love, left waiting for me there. I'm special.

Makes 4-6 servings
1 flank steak (about 1-1/2 lbs.), cut in half if you have a small Crock pot
1 Tbsp. oil
1 large onion, sliced
1/3 cup water
1 can (4 oz.) chopped green chilies
2 Tbsp. vinegar
1 tsp. chili powder
1 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. pepper
In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown steak in oil. Transfer to crockpot. In the same skillet, sauté onion for a minute or two. Gradually add the water. Add remaining ingredients and bring to a boil. Pour over the flank steak. Cover and cook on low for about 8 hours or until the meat is tender. Slice meat and serve with the onion and pan juices.

Homemade Tortillas

Here's what I did:
2 C flour
3 teaspoons vegetable oil
3/4 cup milk - room temp
1.5 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons baking powder
Mix ingredients together in a bowl using your hands. Knead for a few minutes until dough comes together and loses most of the stickiness. Cover with a damp towel for 10 minutes.
Divide dough into 10 balls, cover with a damp towel for 10 minutes.
Using a rolling pin form the tortillas into VERY flat circles. Heat a dry skillet over med-high heat. Place tortilla on the skillet - it will begin to bubble. Let cook 45 seconds and flip.

I have not tried this recipe, but I think I am going to put it on the menu for next week....but I will be buying the tortillas, instead of making them.

NIT Baseball Tournament....Jansen

Jansen was picked up by the 5U McDonough Red, White, Blue Gamers for the NIT tournament this past weekend. Jansen joined this team several times last week at batting practice and really seems to like the kids. We have never seen Jansen play ball with his age group and we had a great time watching him interact with these boys. Jansen will continue to play rec ball with the Sharpsburg 7/8 Marlins, but will play tournament ball with the Gamers if they are willing to have him back.

The whole team was very surprised when Jansen came to bat and the other teams coaches "walked him," instead of having his coach pitch to him.

I heard they had a great time walking around looking at all the "cool" baseball stuff. Jordan got a new "baseball necklace" for his birthday.

and I decided I wasn't sitting at home...so I went to IKEA with mom and dad. We walked around the whole store and found some GREAT deals.

These are 2 "summer comforters" for Jansen's twin beds. They were only 14.99 each. I can't wait to get his room together. Yes, it will be baseball.

I also found these barstools for $19.99 a piece. The boys are loving them. I have been looking for barstools for over a year but didn't want to spend to much money on them. These are perfect for our kitchen.

This little guy has been sooooo bord this weekend without his brother around. He is walking around the house like a lost puppy. He is now off to the cages to give him something to do. Did you have a good weekend?

Here is a sneak peak of our weekend in Auburn. This was our 1st tournament for the 2011 Spring Season. Their were 10 teams in the tournament.

Chris and I had a great time in San Antonio for the Chick-fil-a operators seminar and are looking forward to next year in Orlando. We had to hit the ground running when we returned....Jansen had practice and Jordan is getting ready for a weekend of baseball with his 1st tournament of the season.

We had a scrimmage game tonight and Jordan got to pitch. (he doesn't usually pitch so it was a big deal for him)

Jansen is starting to heal and things are looking good. We are so happy to put this behind us for a few months and enjoy baseball with him and Jordan. Jansen is still sleeping with the wrestling gear, and wears it to play outside. Today while playing, Jordan's hand rubbed his ear, and Jansen came in crying that it hurt and went and put on the head gear to protect it. I love the head gear. Jansen ear doesn't really hurt...we think it's just feel different (sensitive).

Have a great weekend...We are off to Auburn for a weekend full of baseball.

The boys before school this morning. Can you believe they are wearing shorts in February? I love this weather.

Chris is headed to San Antonio this morning. He is starting to feel better. Me on the other hand...not so much. I feel a sinus infection coming on. Will I ever get well? I have a whole week away with my wonderful hubby and no kids. I don't have time to be sick.

The boys and I will finish packing tonight and head to The Cardinals batting practice. Then they are off to Chris' parents until Sunday, and then to my parents until Thursday. They are very excited. FYI grandparents: All they want to do is play outside. Have a great weekend everyone and I'm super excited about our week off from school. I will post an update from San Antonio. When we return The GA Cardinals will be playing in there 1st tournament of the season in Auburn. If anyone is interested in watching let me know and I'll give you more details.

The stomach bug has now hit everyone in the Kenty household. Chris got sick this morning causing him to miss his flight to San Antonio, TX. He is home resting hoping to get on a flight tonight or in the morning.

Chick-fil-a Operators Seminar is Sunday -Wednesday, and I am super excited about going. I will leave Saturday and come back on Thursday with Chris. The weather is beautiful with the high in the mid 70s. The River walkOur Hotel
I hope to enjoy this courtyard, with a good book.

I have A LOT to do to get us ready for our trip. My first stop is cleaning the house so that we don't get sick when we return.

Stomach bug

I have been home today with Jordan, because he now has the stomach bug. He slept all day, and is starting to feel better.

Chris took Jansen to see Dr. Jones to have his stitches taken out. Dr. Jones was pleased at the way Jansen is healing. Looking at the pix below...

We are still amazed.

The picture...above the ear....(black sore) was a little pimple/cyst....Dr. Jones popped it last week during surgery and it is beginning to heal. Our "problem area" is healing really well. If you look really close you can see white cartilage..it is NOT exposed. It just has a very thin layer of skin covering it right now. Over time this will continue to fill in. We are going to put everything on hold for a while and let Jansen heal. We are looking at Stage 3 in June, along with a little touch up to the "problem area."

One of our special friends Sophie will be having Stage 1 surgery tomorrow at Scottish Rite with Dr. Jones. We are praying for the whole Birch family and Dr. Jones tomorrow.

I first want to apologize for not updating the blog this morning. We got to the hospital around 5:30, and let Jansen play a game on the computer and when the battery started going dead, I noticed Chris didn't bring the charger. Sorry....Jansen waiting to get called back.

Its working now..... They rolled him back about 8:00.

We enjoyed breakfast and a cup of coffee with Chris' parents while waiting to hear from Dr. Jones. Dr. Jones came to talk to us about 9:45. He said Jansen did great and everything looks good. He didn't work on the "problem area," because everything is closed up and he didn't want to mess with it. It needs to continue to heal. We did talk to him about maybe touch-up work later if the area needs help with the definition, once the ear is elevated. He said that can be done, and we would do a separate surgery for that if needed.

He did GREAT this time. He didn't get sick at all :)

We stopped by the school to get Jordan and all came home to take a nap. Jansen is back to normal and is ready to go to his friends house tomorrow night to spend the night. Watch out Grant and Garrett he is ready to play. Jansen is not wanting to wear the white netting at the moment, so he thinks crying about it is going to help. We will see. He is off to baseball "to watch," and I hope he comes home with the netting on. We talked to Dr. Jones about taking the netting off and letting him wear the wrestling gear. He said we could, but I would like to see Jansen wear the white bandage through the weekend.

Here is a picture of Jansen's ear as of 2/2/11. We are thrilled that everything is healing and looking good. We will be talking to Dr. Jones about what can be done in the area where the cartilage melted causing a little definition difference...but not much. We are also hoping to start putting scar meds on the problem area to help the stitches area fade away a little more. (the little white area you see above his ear is "fat." I have already talked to Dr. J about it. We are ready for tomorrow and can't wait to see his ear lobe lined up with his new ear.

This boy have been in a bad mood today. Not sure why, but I know he will get over it.

This happy boy is getting ready for Stage 2 of ear reconstruction on Friday.

Arrival time at hospital is 5:30, with surgery at 7:30. We are all starting to talk about the upcoming day and letting Jansen know what all will be going on. He asked me today which hospital we would be at...and when I told him he said "I hate that place, it stinks."

I have heard stage 2 is the easiest. (which we need) Stage 2 is ear lobe reformation, which means moving his ear lobe in line with the "new ear." As of today, I think Dr. Jones will also be working on the problem area that we had(exposed cartilage). We do not have exposed cartilage, but it could use some touch up. So we will see what Dr. Jones says Friday morning. I know Jansen will leave the hospital with stitches and the nice white head wrap. Please keep Jansen and Dr. Jones in your prayers. We need a successful surgery the 1st time around with stage 2.

I will update the blog throughout the day Friday to keep everyone up to date.

Grilled Chicken Penne al Fresco

I tried a new Pampered Chef recipe this week and it was so Yummy, that I had to share with everyone. This is the new Deep Covered Baker I got for Christmas. If you don't have this baker...I think you could put everything in a crock pot and cook 4-6 hours and then add the cook noddles right before serving.

(I cut/paste this recipe from the PC website)

Grilled Chicken Penne al Fresco

INGREDIENTS
4 garlic cloves, peeled
2 cups grape or cherry tomatoes ( I cut several big tomatoes)
3 cups uncooked mezze penne pasta (I used bowtie noodles)
3 cups chicken broth
¾ cup dry white wine such as Chardonnay
½ tsp each salt and coarsely ground black pepper
1¼ cups lightly packed fresh basil leaves, divided
1 oz Parmesan cheese, grated (about ¼ cup packed)
2 cups diced grilled chicken breasts
Additional grated fresh Parmesan cheese
coarsely ground black pepper (optional)
DIRECTIONS
1. Spray Deep Covered Baker with olive oil using Kitchen Spritzer. Slice garlic into baker using Garlic Slicer. Add tomatoes. Cover; microwave on HIGH 4-5 minutes or until tomatoes begin to burst, stirring after 2 minutes. Crush tomatoes using Mix ‘N Chop. Add pasta, broth, wine, salt and black pepper.
2. Return baker to microwave; cover and microwave on HIGH 16-18 minutes or until pasta is tender, stirring after 10 minutes. Meanwhile, coarsely chop basil with Chef’s Knife. Reserve 2 tbsp for garnish. Grate cheese using Rotary Grater.
3. Carefully remove baker from microwave and remove lid, lifting away from you. Add remaining basil,
cheese and chicken to baker; mix well. Garnish with reserved 2 tbsp basil, additional Parmesan cheese and black pepper, if desired.
Cook’s Tips: An additional ¾ cup chicken broth can be substituted for the wine, if desired.Any tube-shaped pasta requiring 9-11 minutes cook time, such as penne or rigatoni, can be substituted for the mezze penne pasta.
To grill chicken in the Grill Pan, season 2 chicken breasts, about 6 oz each, with salt and black pepper. Heat Grill Pan over medium-high heat 5 minutes. Spray pan with oil. Cook chicken 4-6 minutes or until grill marks appear. ( I cooked chicken on the stove)

I love working at the school with my boys. It makes my day to see them in the hallway. Our principal, Dr. Simmons, told me he would be giving Jordan the special Headsprout award, so I went to visit his classroom to take a few pictures.

Pre-op Stage 2

Today we had pre-op for stage 2 reconstruction. We had a long wait, but the boys had fun meeting 2 new families going through the same process. Both of these families were from out of town, and it made me thankful that we live so close to Dr. Jones office.

waiting..............................and finally after an hour we got to go back to the room.
Jansen got a good report and Dr. Jones talked a little about the surgery next Friday, Feb. 4. It will be about 2 hours long. We will continue to watch the "problem area", to make sure it continues to heal.
If Dr. Jones needs to clean it up a little bit he will do a "pinch graft." A lot of times when they do the ear lobe formation, they have extra skin, and instead of throwing it away he will use some of it to clean up the "problem area." If he does this, it doesn't require stitches or any cutting. Jansen is very excited about the next stage. Once we get stage 2 over and healed, we will wait until June to continue on. This little boy has LOTS of baseball ahead of him and he doesn't want to miss any of it.

Check out the outline of his "new ear!!!!" He still has a little healing to do, but we are all so impressed with the work Dr. Jones does. When Jansen looks at it, he just grins!!! :)

Apple Dumplings

Apple Dumplings
2 cans crescent rolls
1/1/2 cup sugar
2 granny apples
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 sticks butter
1 can mountain dew

Cut/slice/peer apples
Roll apple in crescent roll
Melt butter, mix sugar and cinnamon
Pour on apple and then mountain dew

Bake uncover for 350 for 30-35

Serve with ice cream

When Jansen was born I will never forget how lonely and lost I was. I knew nothing about Microtia and knew no one that I could relate too.

Chris came across someone when Jansen was a baby that knew a family that had a special little boy like us. I will never forget the night Molly called to talk about our babies.

Molly- you have been a dear friend to me over these past 5 years. I thank God for putting me in contact with you....After 5 years... and lots of blogging, facebooking, and phone calls, I finally got to meet Molly and her wonderful family. Molly and I

Nathan(Molly's son) has completed all 4 surgeries...and his new ear is wonderful. They had an appointment with Dr. Jones today and we knew it was a perfect time to finally meet.

We also got to meet up with our new friends The Burrows. Their son Greyson, just completed stage 3. Courtney....thanks for all your wonderful advice over the past few months.

While we were at the doctors office, we all met The Birch family. Their sweet little Sophie will be having stage 1 in February. Renee-I am here if you have any questions or need a shoulder to cry on.

After everyone met with Dr. Jones we headed to lunch at Uncle Julio.

Our lunch today will be something I will NEVER forget. I hope Jansen, Greyson, Nathan, and Sophie will remember this day too. These are 4 special kids.

Now a little about Jansen's visit with Dr. Jones....

We finally got a good report. Dr. Jones cleaned up Jansen's ear and we have very little cartilage showing!!! Everything is healing and blood is flowing again. The healing will continue and now .....It's time to move on!!!!

Jansen has been wearing this head gear for several week and boy has it been nice. It is keeping his ear protected and he is still able to scratch his head. We talked to our doctor about this and he also loves it. All my Microtia parents...this is a must if you are going through surgeries right now.
